A Starry Week of Creativity at Hen & Chicks Studio
Week Ending January 24, 2026
This week at Hen & Chicks Studio has been full of creativity, inspiration, and meaningful stitching. From star-filled free patterns and nostalgic fat quarter bundles to a limited quilt kit and a heartfelt video update, our community has been busy making, dreaming, and planning what’s next. Here’s a look at what rose to the top this week.

Top Downloads
Stars never go out of style, and this week proved it. Two free downloadable patterns tied for the top spot in our January Chick Picks newsletter.

Snow Balls and Stars is a playful mix of star blocks, snowball blocks, and crisp geometry. With an 8″ block size and a finished quilt measuring 76″ × 86″, it makes a wonderful twin-size bed topper. Confident beginners will appreciate the clear construction, while experienced quilters will enjoy the classic layout with a fresh feel. It’s a pattern that invites creativity without feeling overwhelming.

Kim Diehl Heritage Stars offers a charming, scrappy approach to star quilting. Finishing at 34½″ × 34½″, this smaller quilt is perfect as a wall hanging, table topper, or seasonal accent. With 6″ blocks and a cozy, traditional look, it’s ideal for advanced beginners who love working with rich prints and timeless designs. Both patterns are wonderful reminders of why stars remain a favorite quilting motif.

Lori Holt Farmer's Daughter Fat Quarter bundle for quilters
Top Fat Quarter Bundle: Farmer’s Daughter, Light & Dark

It’s no surprise that Lori Holt’s Farmer’s Daughter collection topped the fat quarter charts again—this time with a tie between the lights and the darks.

The Lights bundle includes 12 fat quarters in soft blush pinks, buttercream yellows, sky blues, and mint greens. With vintage florals and farm-inspired prints, it feels cheerful, nostalgic, and perfect for sampler quilts, scrappy throws, or smaller projects that shine with lighter tones.

The Darks bundle is a generous 42 fat quarters filled with warm reds, earthy browns, sage greens, twilight blues, and creamy neutrals. This curated mix brings depth and contrast, making it ideal for stash building, larger quilts, or pairing with the lights for a beautifully balanced project. Together, these bundles offer endless possibilities and that comforting, “feels like home” aesthetic so many quilters love.

Top Quilt Kit
This week’s most popular kit was the Sunday Best Quilts Woolly Whims On a Whim Quilt Kit—and for good reason. This crib-size quilt finishes at 48½″ square and features fabrics from the Woolly Whims collection. The kit includes everything needed for the quilt top and binding, plus the Sunday Best Quilts book containing the pattern.

Here’s the important part: the book is out of print. Once these kits are gone, they’re truly gone. Suitable for all skill levels, this kit is a wonderful opportunity to create something special with a collection that’s getting harder to find. It’s a cozy, thoughtful project with just the right mix of simplicity and charm.

Top Video
The most-watched video of the week was a heartfelt update on my Twinkle quilt made with my grandmother’s fabrics. It’s a project rooted in memory and meaning, and it’s been a powerful reminder of why scrap quilting resonates so deeply with so many of us.

Twinkle is beloved for good reason. It doesn’t require background fabric, making it perfect for using what you already have. Two star block sizes add movement across the quilt top, and the construction protects those precious star points—no trimming heartbreak here. The project has also been a gentle encouragement to embrace small pockets of sewing time. Fifteen to thirty minutes, once or twice a day, really does add up.

Whether you’re stitching with treasured fabrics or simply trying to make progress on a long-awaited project, this video has inspired many to pull out their scraps, keep their machines ready, and enjoy the process one stitch at a time.
