Today’s Tour de Chicks was all about finishing quilts beautifully and adding the softest, coziest touches to your projects. Heidi started by sharing some of the most-loved textures in the shop, including Luxe options from Shannon Fabrics and Double Lush Velvet from Riley Blake Designs. These fabrics are ideal for throws, receiving blankets, and any project where softness is the star.
We also highlighted two free downloadable patterns that customers enjoy making again and again. The Luxe Throw is a quick, high-impact project perfect for gifting or keeping for yourself. The Receiving Blanket pattern is equally versatile—use Cuddle for extra softness, or go all flannel or all cotton for a simple and sweet baby gift.
From there, the tour moved into backing fabrics. Heidi explained the difference between 90"-wide C3 Cuddle and 60"-wide Luxe, then turned the camera toward a full wall of cotton wide backs. Most measure 108", but we also carry 118"-wide options and even 108"-wide flannel for projects that need extra warmth. Wide backs make quilt finishing easier and can also be used creatively for borders, bindings, and backgrounds.

A longarm quilting pro-tip rounded out today’s video. When choosing your backing, think about how the thread will look on the back of the quilt. A busy backing helps hide stitches, a coordinating color blends and adds texture, and a contrasting fabric will let your quilting design stand out. There’s no right or wrong—just what feels right for your project.
If you missed today’s Tour de Chicks, be sure to watch the video and explore the fabrics and free patterns mentioned. Whether you’re finishing a quilt, planning a new throw, or looking for backing inspiration, we’re here to help you find exactly what you need at Hen & Chicks Studio.
